Hello,

Genital herpes has a typical appearance and the doctor should be able to distinguish it while you have the active lesions. Normally herpes does not cause continuous symptoms and there is no symptoms if it is not active.

So I would recommend you to see your doctor while you have the lesions and the pain and the doctor should be able to notice if it is herpes or not and can give you acyclovir which is an antibiotic that kills the virus that causes herpes.

Unfortunately this does not kill the virus sleeping in your ganglions (part of the nervous system) so it does not prevent recurrence but will help relieve your pain.
To prevent recurrence regular daily use of small dose of acyclovir can be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
